Windows 8 disable Metro UI
I bet I am not the only one looking for ways to disable Metro UI on Windows 8. I was playing around with it and I was so annoyed with metro UI popping up once a while just to annoy me.
I still haven’t figure out how to disable the metro UI actually. The moment I found out how, I will let you guys know. If you guys to have more info, please share it here!
update: 1 hour later.. still can’t figure out how to disable the damn thing, if it is possible at all.
update: Thanks mandel129 . Here’s how you can disable metro UI
Rename c:\Windows\System32\shsxs.dll to something else =)
Preferred way, by editing the registry
- Open regedit by typing regedit at the Start screen.
- Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
- Modify the RPEnabled key to a “0” instead of the default “1”.
- To return to the Metro UI, just change the value back to a “1”.

Its amazing that ALL the other features are great. I love the copy dialog, the hyper-v on the client, the responsiveness (kinda don’t like the dumbed-down task manager, should be able to get it to be “rough” as before).
But the metro start menu kills it for me. Its unthinkable to retrain the millions of windows users to this. Corporate will never upgrade. This is good for tablets, period. For full blown desktops, PLEAVE, give me back win7 start menu.

Metro is absolutely horrible for real use of a computer, MS better include an easier way to disable Metro, it is horrible for non touch screen, and just regular terrible for touch screen.

Thanks, needed that .. As far as the task manager goes, there is a world of info hidden in there if you click the button at the bottom.
Installs so far -
VirtualBox win8 x64 everything working except the vbox drivers, but the default ms driver is running aero.
HP DV6700 – win8 x64 installed as upgrade from (heh) vista x64 .. The supplied intel drivers didn’t work for my x3100 graphics, downloaded and install win7 x64 drivers and all is good

Soooooooooooooooo glad that trash can be removed. I am fine with it being there for people that want it, but at least we can toss it. I just hope they don’t lock it in. If they do, I for one won’t be upgrading.

Please don’t do it by renaming the file……
Its quite bad karmar and should fill the event viewer with a few errors and break anything that wants to link against it….. Its just bad.
Simply tell windows not to use it:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
set the key RPEnabled to 0

Setting HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RPEnabled = 0 doesn’t work. It basically turns off Windows 8.

on a 64bit VirtualBox it only seemed to be metro, but it was late, was I missing something?

Second that. Don’t rename, do the regedit thing. For instance, after renaming this file, the WiFi network list became unavailable, just wouldn’t appear. Also, my WiFi would’nt connect to anything anymore.
After re-renaming the file back to it’s original name, and doing the register tweak, WiFi is back in action.
May be machine-specific, but proves that on a lower level, the dll file does more than just enable and disable Metro, so use caution. And the register tweak ONLY disables Metro, so I recommend that. Just my two cents though, and YMMV.

It worked from the beggining. Thanks for sharing this. Like one of the guys say: who cares about the god damn metro “face”; that was made for tablets. I do not have a tablet..yet
but I do not see the purpose on a desktop for that. Thanks again !

That pretty much makes it Windows 7, they should definitely make the Metro UI optional for desktops. tablets I can see a use for it, but then I prefer Android because I can choose how the home screen is layed out. Still wouldn’t be feeling the Metro UI on a phone or a tablet…
