Do we need the tie?

Morten Lundal (that digi dude) think that in the future, no one will wear that silly, tiny piece of fabric around your neck, also fondly known as "ties". He was absolutely right. Those green thing that visit us from the future, (our great, great grand kid doing some, time-traveling joyride) seems not to wear much clothing at all. I mean, hey what's the point right? Thanks to global warming, earth is hot enough already. They also perhaps have been "taking the time to re-think its relevance" and figure that clothing is a waste of time and money.

Seriously, I think Mr Lundal, have a very good point, that is to challenge existing beliefs (which by the way, he manage to write down just before I am about to erase any thought of his column). But to take it on the humble 'ties' is just cruel. Those ties has probably done a lot of good, compared to say, the pointless underwear?

The suit and the ties, without doubt is a symbol of something and it portray an image. Image of what? you might ask. Well, from where I am sitting, it is a signal that we "mean business". Whatever it was created for in the past, was an interesting historical fact. For most of us, those "office clothing" simply shows that we're employed to help our company make money. Unlike most other profession, businessmen or entrepreneur doesn't have any other fancy uniform. Policemen have some mean looking clothing, (with a really stupid hat), nurses, again with even more ridiculous headgear. What else, boys scout with that really silly pseudo-ties, must the doctors all wear whites?.

Strangely enough, mr ceo himself never wear ties to office to "say something". But if nobody else wear it, you no longer had the privilege to "say something" would you. You see, it is only human that most people need to feel the sense of belonging to a particular group of similarly minded people. Some sort of costumes is perhaps the easiest way to set the mood straight.

Mr CEO also mention that the ties "symbolises an artificial distance we create between individuals and also between people’s home and work-lives". Well, sometimes that is exactly what we need. Not everyone wants to make their work, their lives. For a lot of people these silly costumes help them to focus on the task at hand. That silly costumes helps Batman stay sane during the day while helping him becoming a mean, crime fighting machines at night. Those red underwear, is the real source of Superman's power, and those stethoscopes around the doctor's neck is partly the reason why you'd willingly undress if he ask you to.

I am not trying to say we should blindly wear the ties. All I say is, we should try to understand why certain things are practices. What are their advantage, and how can I make use of it's power. I am not trying to defend the ties, but I'll be damned if I lose one of my 'tools' and have only jeans and t-shirt to go to work to, daily.
